ジョン・トムソン（John Thomson, 1837-1921）は、スコットランド出身の写真家。写真の技術が急速に進歩しつつあった1870年ごろに清朝治下の各地を訪れ、生動感あふれる写真を残しました。特に、大判の豪華四巻本 Illustrations of China and Its People (London, 1873-1874)は、その説明文とあいまって貴重な史料となっています。このサイトではそんなトムソンの写真の世界を解説とともにご紹介します。

He left behind photographs that provide a full sense of life of the period. In particular, his large-format four-volume Illustrations of China and Its People (London, 1873-1874), together with its explanatory text, is a valuable historical document. This site aims to introduce the world of Thomson's photographs with commentaries.＞ |
